As many in our congregation are aware, we have struggled prayerfully and emotionally over conduct of the United Methodist denominational administration for several years. At a high level, this concern relates to a number of issues dealing with the interpretation of Scripture and the enforcement of our denominational laws, otherwise known as The Discipline, equitably and fairly for all local United Methodist conferences and churches across the United States and around the world. An eventual split is anticipated fully, but the administration continues to delay action on this matter. As a result of continued frustration of fulfilling our mission as Tower Life Center, our church family decided to officially disaffiliate - leave the denomination to become an independent church - earlier this month, setting the official date of disaffiliation as July 1, 2021. With this decision, the denomination has levied a final financial penalty that must be paid by December 1. Without these funds, Tower Life Center will not be Free to Serve.
We value the Bible and the teachings within the Bible and want to make followers of Jesus Christ based on those teachings. We believe the Bible is true and the teachings are real. With God's help, we will overcome this battle and be free to serve those not just in our community but throughout the world.
Paul's letter to the Ephesians gives us strong guidance as we seek to become Free to Serve.
In light of all this, here’s what I want you to do. While I’m locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk – better yet, run! – on the road God called you to travel. I don’t want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don’t want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline – not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences. (The Message, Ephesians 4:1-3)
